Fanola Artist Q&A: Melissa Brough

Mel is one of our amazing Fanola Artists, and you can find her, as well as her flawless colour creations, over on Instagram and TikTok. She is a senior colour technician based at HXHair. Mel inspires us, on a day to day basis, with her flair for colour. She constantly provides us with content that makes us want to dye our hair every colour of the rainbow. Although Mel is our queen of unicorn hair, she also knows a thing or two about a classic balayage and can slay an icy blonde. A hairdresser with many talents. We wouldn’t expect anything less from a Fanola Artist, after all.

What are your favourite things about being a Fanola Artist?

All of the opportunities that have been given to me. Getting to know and meet all the other artists, seeing their incredible work and trying out all the amazing products!

What hair trends do you predict for this year?

Definitely a lot of colour blocking, striking colours and pastels. Similar to 2020 but amped up a lot more!

What are your favourite Fanola products?

It has got to be the Oro Therapy Colouring Masks and the Styling Tools Liss Smoothing Fluid. Anything hydrating has my heart!

If you had to pick just one, what is your favourite hair colour you have created with a Fanola formula?

100% this! You can’t go wrong with pink right?

The formulas were:

Root – Oro Therapy 5.00 and Rosso.
Mids – Oro Therapy Mask in Fuschia and the Double Ash Free Paint to smoke it out slightly.
Ends – Rose Gold toner, a dab of Rosso Intensifier and 9.2f.

How do you plan to spend your time during lockdown?

I will be spending a lot of time with doll heads! Colouring them and trying things on them out of my comfort zone. Also testing out products I’ve never used before!

What advice would you give someone who is tempted to dye their own roots in lockdown?

I understand it’s very tempting, but it’s absolutely not worth the struggle of going through a colour correction in a few months! Maybe try putting a pink semi on or something to add a little spice!

How would you describe yourself in 3 words?

Creative, Quirky and Colourful.

What song do you currently have on repeat?

1×1 – Bring Me The Horizon (ft. Nova Twins.)

If you could do anyone’s hair in the world right now, who would it be?

Billie Eilish.

What has been the highlight of your hairdressing career so far?

Doing the “not just one” YouTube video and expressing my creativity. It was something I’d never done before, and I enjoyed being out of my comfort zone. But it definitely helped me grow as an artist.

We know you love switching up your hair colour. Which colour are you planning on going next?

I honestly rarely know until the second I do it, but blue or yellow is on my mind again!

Now it’s time to go and show Mel some love by following her on her social media platforms! Make sure you check back for our next Fanola artist Q&A.

  1. hi please could you help on how to get baby blue hair. but they don’t want permanent? thank you

    1. Hi Kyley,

      Thank you for your question!

You could try mixing out Pure Aqua Fanola Free Paint with the Clear Free paint to dilute the colour.

We would recommend doing a strand test before applying all over to be sure you have achieved the colour you want.

The Free Paint Colours are semi-permanent. Read our blog post for more info – https://fanolaofficial.co.uk/news/semi-permanent-hair-colour-at-home/

      Amy 🙂
