Healthy Hair and A Balanced Diet

Hair is complicated. It would be that friend that is really fussy about where you go to eat. The one who is only ever available when you’re not, or the friendship that needs a bit more extra effort than the rest. However, we believe that your hair deserves the best and for your hair to be its best, you need to know what is good for your hair, as well as what isn’t. You are probably already aware of some of the things that can affect the health of your hair. The most know factors are heat damage from heated styling tools, colour damage, and sun damage. But the health of your hair isn’t only affected by external factors. What you put into your body can also contribute to healthy hair.

In this blog post, we will discuss vitamin and nutrients to include in your diet to encourage healthy hair.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

It is important that you include foods high in omega-3 fatty acids in your diet, as your body cannot make them, so, therefore, rely on food for them instead. They help to contribute to a healthy scalp and hair as they provide the natural oils that coat your strands to keep them hydrated. Foods that are high in omega-3 fatty acids are fatty fishes like salmon and sardines. However, if you are not a fan of fish other alternatives are chia seeds, hazelnuts and soya beans.

Protein

Part of our hair is made of a protein called keratin which is why it is essential that your diet includes enough of it. If your diet isn’t sufficient in protein you may find that your hair is brittle. Luckily for you, a lot of different food is high in protein. Be sure to include eggs, chicken, or quinoa as part of a healthy, balanced diet.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A is required by your body for your sebaceous glands to produce sebum. Sebum is a natural oil that you will find on your scalp and your hair. It protects and moisturises both your scalp and strands which is necessary for healthy hair growth. Vitamin A can be found in cheese, milk and yoghurt.

Vitamin E 

Vitamin E is great for your hair as it helps to increase hair growth. It also provides protection for your hair from the sun. Vitamin E can be found in plant oils, spinach, and nuts.

Balanced Diet Is Best

Above we have discussed just a few vitamins and nutrients that are required for healthy hair. But it is important to recognise that the foods discussed are needed as part of a balanced diet.

According to the NHS, a balanced diet ‘means eating a wide variety of foods in the right proportions, and consuming the right amount of food and drink to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight.’
